What's Bangin' in Sunny's Shop....
Crazy's Mama! Lmao
But also I'm doin another "upgrade" to the Econo...if this thing turns out how I want it to....
Got me a junked out wideglide fender off some later model Evo I think, had a bad-ish dent on front right and some gouging on the side....other than that pretty good shape...$20 I figgered good deal.
So I banged out the dents with my hammer and dolly, pretty rough but I'll fix that...
Then I scribed on some markings for cutting and shaping

Re: What's Bangin' in Sunny's Shop....
Yes I bucked the front off it....and that stripe down the middle is 3/4" wide channel to come out this time....
It's been said I'm "the Charlie Daniels of the side grinder"....well I'm not that good but I'm not scared...
and that's about when things started to fall apart
So I stitched her together...a spot-at-a-time...slow an steady
Finally got it buttoned enuff to take a better look at it...
So tonite I'll finish the welding and start the sanding/mudding/sanding process...bodywork is pretty satisfying work for me, I dunno why....maybe its the dust and fumes....
Later, Sunny

Bangin a little dolly in the shed. Pretty suggestive visual there.
So what's the idea on the "new" fender for the Econo?
Not satisfied w/ the one that you reworked previously?
Your metal workin skills, Charlie (?), are beyond my talents. Lookin good.

Nice tip work, John. Do ya have to space the mounts to fit your fork legs?

Yes I'll have to Denn, the fender on there right now is 1" narrower than stock, this one is 3/4" narrower, I got some aluminum bungstock (is that a word lol?) I'll cut down to space it...and I got some other brackets I'm workin on to fasten it, part of the design idea...

Finishing of moulding
Hi-build primer to look it over and....inevitably do more work!
Side-boob
...gettin close though...
Here's a glimpse of what it will look like...now you purists might wanna close your eyes...it looked weird to me at first but the more I looked at it from all angles the more I liked it...metal oil line will be replaced with 5/8" stainless w mounts for attachment to axle, shackle on fender is plated gate hinge from hardware store...

Re: What's Bangin' in Sunny's Shop....
Hey Denn,
It's definitely about design, don't need the brace up there...my idea is a nod to the old leaf springer shackles...gonna polish the stainless, the gate hinge is nickel plated, will use plated hardware and of course the fender will be black...

Should look unique when finished ,John. The old style fender support is what it reminded me of.

Ok, Master body-man , what filler do you use to fill the imperfections before paintin?
I'm usin Marson's Spot and Filling Putty. It's red oxide coloured and the last couple of times I've been thinkin it's time to try something else. I've got my fairing just about ready for some fillin before I prime it for paint. Waiting for the epoxy repair to tack off before sandin and applyin some filler.

Heh heh I'm no body-man Denn...more like 40 foot job....I just use Evercoat lite weight filler from Lordco, red hardener, then after multiple elbow greasing sanding jobs down to about 400 grit, Pro-form high build primer also from Lordco, continued sand and prime and sand with at least 600, then paint. But you've seen how dirty my Shovel is...there's a reason

The Evercoat filler needs to be mixed w/ red hardener ?sunnydog wrote:Heh heh I'm no body-man Denn...more like 40 foot job....I just use Evercoat lite weight filler from Lordco, red hardener, then after multiple elbow greasing sanding jobs down to about 400 grit, Pro-form high build primer also from Lordco, continued sand and prime and sand with at least 600, then paint. I'm experienced in the fill ,prime and sand routine. When I originally did the fairing ,I was forever refillin and sandin. Finally said "Good enough!" I wasn't goin to be lookin at it while I rode.
Noticed when cleanin up the bugs and road grime from last year that some of those bugs have been suckin down thinners. They left permanent gut splash marks in the paint. It'll all get sanded and recoated anywho due to stone chips here and there.
I'm not anal about road grime on the scoot. It'll be clean to start but after that it's the Weerier's summer look. Unless it's a wet ride goin into Horsethief and then it might get a quick rinse. That calcium laden slime turns to concrete when baked on.

Re: What's Bangin' in Sunny's Shop....
Hey Denn, can use blue or red hardener, just that the red that I got seems smoother and less chance of little lumps in bondo that seem to leave some small pits that show thru paint. That hi build primer is nice stuff, fills small inconsistencies.
So the bug blood/guts is corrosive to paint? Damn...wonder if there's a turtle wax or sumthin could protect from that?

That Marson's spot and filling is a 1 part product. Dries fairly quickly, especially on the spreader. Usually get those little hard nuggets that scrape grooves in the patch. Makes for a lot of retouch-up/resand work.
I Carnaba Waxed my tins and fairing before ridein last spring. 2 coats but I guess bug exoskeleton at 70+ mph cuts through it.

Re: What's Bangin' in Sunny's Shop....
Yes those lumps are a pain! Its why I use the two part so I can get my consistency to where it gives me more time to work with it...nothin' like the panic that sets in when you realize the bondo is getting too hard to work with and you're only part way to getting a nice coating laid down.
