My shovel chop. Progress photos.
This might kick me in the ass to get buildin this bike. I have much more respect for how much work this stuff is after trying it myself.
Frame on a bench, and here we go...
Found a mag, gonna give it a whirl.
Found the stance I was lookin for.
Sissy bar started and some exhaust

Some sissy bar detail
All tacked up.
Drilling holes straight in round bar, crucial tool.
I gotta hold these things together? Time to start braining good,

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
So here's kinda what I came up with.
And tacked up. Pretty jazzed on this. It turned out well (in my mind at least)
Starting with an oil bag mount
Oil bag hung, trying yet another set of bars
Too damned short for forwards, so might as well build mids right?
More mids
Bend bend repeat. fuck up, throw away do again.
Motor plate on, clutch lever actuation unit installed
Trying to get all the fuel I can from my tank
Headlight mount. Coulda bought one for 15$ but someone wise once told me, if you're shoppin, you arent choppin
Happy with the outcome.
Pipes on. Have since added bracing etc,
Opend up pandoras box....
More bars. Like em, but been done lots.
Hah! just weird enough.
Tail light began mounting

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
Alright, Needed to whip up some sort of mount for the master cylinder.
Welded this puppy onto the frame and now have a spot for the master.
The exhaust needed some more support at the higher end of the upsweeps. Bent up some round bar and tied em together.
Started to dick around with the clutch release arm as well as the shift lever.

Seat stuff.
I built the pan outta sheet metal, radiused it to the fender, and built myself a seating area. This is an early rendition
Got it shaped right for the bike, and then started gluing on leather strips as Bob requested them, and he's the one doing the covering. I've since rivetted them on as well. Makes a guy feel a bit safer.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
Finished up the trans. Wishing I would have tried that one dealy all you cats are running, but heck, it's done. Going to see if it doesn't leak and if it does, so be it, I'll get it done next time it comes apart.
Shot of the trans all together and pretty
Lee helped me out by filling in the holes I opted to cut into my tank, and John helped me get some bodywork done, so this is kinda where the tank lands.
I wanted to run cloth covered wire, but couldn't really find a good source on it, until:
It's a modern wire with plastic insulation that is then cloth wrapped. The best part was, it was 35$ to my door from a chap in Vancouver. He set up a selection based on the color and style of the bike, was pretty damned cool order that one.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
So I ordered a chain guard, rather than build one. Getting it dialed still took some dicking around.
Had to build a mount for the front end, used a chunk of aluminum. It'll get polished. Maybe.
I had to trim the bolt heads on the chain guard end as I needed chain clearance. The bolts will wind up with acorn nuts in the end.
Damned near finished the brake set up. Bleeding the system to make sure they work and then I'm done there. The peg is 1" stock, with a stock Harley twin cam (Blasphemy I know) grip for a peg of sorts. This one was a freebie, which is rad.
re-did the clutch release arm. I couldn't get the rod to work so I opted for a chain. Looks mechanical. Pretty stoked so far. Going to not use bolts and use a stud instead. That's an easy enough change anyways. This chain is rated for 200# so here's to hoping that's adequate over time. Got the foot control to a comfortable position, fairly lucky since there's no room for adjustment with this set up.
Went for a weld on spring hidden kick stand which you can see above. It is set for maximum gangster lean as seen below.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
I set out some stand offs for the license plate mount. I have since trimmed it, as it was just too godamn big. Also of note, I pussed out and am running turn signals. This bike won't be super legit, but I want to be close. Don't much like talking to the gestapo.
On the electrical train, I wanted to run just a wee box. Was looking for a first aid kit, mentioned it to sunny while having a beer in his shop and he fired over this here black box. I'll put my fuses and terminal block in there for ease of access. Thanks again John.
Also got the battery box that John helped me out with mounted on the back of the trans plate. Going to just use a belt to hold the bastard down. Should work out.
I wanted to keep the bars free of switches of any kind, so I made this here switch block thing. Cut one side out of some square tubing and welded a cap to the top. I've gotta order some switches and drill some holes. Should be pretty clean.
Had to come up with some neck stops. I threaded a piece of 9/16 round bar and shaved off some allen head bolts to give me this.
It works well with the stock lower tree. Should even add some more gangster lean.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IJCFc_qkHw
I built some stand offs for the voltage regulator. It sure looks cleaner than just mounting it flat to the engine mount. Little bit turned down, which looks flat when the front end is cranked up so.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
I knew it was going to be long, and big, but didn't really gain an appreciation for it until I sat on it and somebody took a photo. The sissy bar reaches the back of my head, and the bars at their highest are damned near the same. I couldn't run forwards if I wanted to. Short dude problems. The high mids though, fit really well, and bars are comfy. It should be fairly comfy anyways. As far as a long bike with no suspension goes.
Well dudes, that's where I'am at so far. lots to go, but getting it done one day at a time.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
So I've been plunking away on this thing some more, I'm seeing light. But not calling anything out, when I did that last year Hammer was sure to call my bluff, hahaha.
Double checking the primary alignment. Don't need to roast belts. They're expensive.
Finished up my switch block, turn signals up top, high beam below and magneto kill below that. Pretty jazzed on how this turned out. Cut the back out of a piece of square stock, and welded a cap to the top. Used fancy ass sealed switches from the auto parts depot. 20$ a piece, but shouldn't offer me grief. Godamn motorcycles...
Johnny hooked me up with a black box for electrical. Gives me a spot for fuses and a power distribution block thinger. The switch is for main power. It's since gotten busier.
Can't run em down the backbone, so I've got all this fancy wire I'm trying to hide. I feel indecisive. Spend cash on nice stuff, and hide it. Oh choppers, you don't make sense.
Wanted to keep the wires underneath the fender tied up and safe. Used a piece of 5/16" brake line, holds two wires but not much else. It bent nice, and welded up underneath real easy. Again, hiding work.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
Jammed on an older style oil filter.
The bracket hangs off the footpeg mount and rear pipe mount.
Behind that frame rail is a speedo drive unit. I'm running it off the sprocket, as there's no room for it on the brake side. Sunny helped me with a front wheel speedo drive, which is on the right hand side. Robin mentioned that perhaps it won't rotate the correct way, which was entirely true. I went with an 90 fl drive unit, which ran on the left side and would serve my purposes. I'll drop that other one back off to you Sunny, it's sitting on my toolbox, I've just neglected to grab it.
Gotta keep the cable tucked up.
Cut the head off a bolt, and drilled it hollow. Tapped a hole in the drive sprocket, slotted the end of the hollow bastard, pulled it through, locktited, and staked. Shouldn't go anywhere and gives the speedo drive something to work with. Should work, and if not, so be it.
Found me a slice of heat shield for the missus
It's pretty much together. Onto the next part.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
Powder coat is done! Can't afford chrome and black is ever so classic, so all my bits and bobs are now black as the night sky. Very impressed with Brian Petersons work in Cranbrook. It all turned out well, unless my prep wasn't perfect, as was the case in a few spots. Nobody to blame but myself. So yea, heres some more photos
We primered the tank and fender today, didn't get a photo as they were still hanging in the booth. I missed a spot, and left a massive cavern on the front, but a bit more body work and we can re prime. Then a guy just needs to pick some paint, and get it done. It's coming right along fellas.

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
Alright, more photos!
Body work is not my strong point. I didn't nail it, but it'll do.
Was missing one spoke, and I hope to get the missus on the back. It was an inside spoke, and a real bitch to replace just the one, so I cut all the other 39 of em out and start fresh. the hub was pretty ugly so I cleaned it as best I could.
Then I sprayed that thing black.
This was the point I realized I have gotten in deep. I had a good teacher who basically told me, every spoke has a home.
He didn't lie. They all landed in place, didn't even porcupine on me. I attribute that to horseshit luck
Mounted a new Avon MK2 (thats what all the cool kids run) and did my wheel bearings. It's like a whole new wheel!

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
After the rear wheel was laced I began final assembly. The front end at this point needs seals, and is still a mock up version.
I plunked the motor in. It seems I removed the trans about a thousand times
The seat was upholstered in town. The guy was supposed to foam the seat call me and Bob was going to tackle it. I arrived to pick it up and it was done.
I've spent entirely too much time sanding the tins. I would bring em home and sand in the basement.
Got all my oil lines plumbed and sorted. I flipped the oil filter housing since this shot so it, you know, works.
Timed the camchest
Adjusted the pushrods. Tried to time the mag. It's still out.
I don't have many shots of painting it yellow, but here it is. Laying out graphics
Taping was fun. I'm kinda not great at it, it was harder to peel than it could have been.
Robin hosed it down with clear then used a homemade flake buster to throw red metalflake to it
Peeling was pretty nerve wracking. Turned out.

I'm impressed.Ya strung your own wheel.Looks good.
Did ya have access to a truein stand?
Got all the makeins to do my own.Spare shovel hub (same kinda shape as yours was),stainless spoke set (had it for 20+ yrs.) and a late evo (?) rim (swap meet deal). Was quoted $70 to have a bike mechanic assemble it for me.I'll have to strip out the evo rim. It's got an odd offset center hub in it.
Might just put all my parts together and take it to him to true up.
Paintwork looks Grrrreat! Should be able ta spot your scoot in a pack.good work there.
Beer and bike mag distactions considered!!

Hey Dennman. Thanks, it was a fun project. We have a truing stand at the shop, so yea, Had one of those at my disposal. I think I was four hours from parts to a wheel. Pretty reasonable for a first crack. Every spoke has a home, I was told. Worked for me anyways. 70$ to lace and true would be a bargain for sure.
Beer and paint fumes go hand in hand. Hah!

Re: My shovel chop. Progress photos.
Monday i got my rear fender, sissy bar mounted last monday. Finished up my wiring.
Tail light, turn signal and sissy bar from the back
I put the wheel on, it was sunny out, so I pretty much had to temporarily mount the tank and seat to roll it into the sun.
I'm getting close. Monday I intend to put a good day in and see how far I get.
