started to build my custom seat...got this great Permatex upholstery adhesive, put it on both surfaces, wait 5 min till tacky, then it really bonds shit but good. I'm using Cambodian Tire ground high density foam ground sheet as my seat building material...used it on a dirt bike seat and very pleased with results.
Got a start on her...essential tools are good quality shop scissors (Henckels brand) and a ginsu bread knife (late nite TV purchase)
I ordered a big piece of cowhide I'm waiting for in the mail...hopefully I don't get cornholed by Canada Post...oh well got all winter I guess...

I'll be watchin the progress.Never used that spray-on for anything.Been a few times that it would have been easier to use than trying to spread contact cement with a brush.

I've always used Scotch Super 77 Spray Adhesive.
We are lucky that we have Surplus Herbie's here in town for foam needs - they have a whole area designated to foam of different types and thickness.
Looking good John, who's going to stitch your cowhide?

Yes Denn this spray on stuff is literally contact cement...just a lot easier to use in a spray can.
Paul the plan is to try do it myself...I bought an old industrial sewing machine bout 4-5 yrs ago...it can sew up to 1/4” leather.

Watcha got there? 8 oz.? That's some thick stuff to sew.I sewed all my heavy leather by hand. I prepunched all the thread holes. Always wanted a commercial cobbler's sewin machine.

I got my machine off ebay, paid about $200 US, it's really sturdy, has walking foot on it, and hand crank if you get into heavy shit you wanna go real slow thru. This leather is just under 1/8" thick, not sure of weight rating....

I did alot of experimentin in my first years.I was usein 8 oz oak tanned. It's like workin with 1/8" thick panneling only a bit flexible.Goin around corners was interestin. When attachin two pieces together I had to cut Vs in the edge to relieve the folds that occur.

got most of my foam work done
Profile is pretty much what I wanted
Try her out on the bike...it’s firm but that’s what I wanted, less sweatin when I ride

I’m really liking the look of this seat, only thing I’m gonna add is some foam along sides on top rear level (triangular shapes)
lots of messin around but it’s worth the time for my baby. This pic is from just before final layer foam glued on seat pad...you can see how I was carving on it to shape near tank....that’s all covered now. Leather has arrived so next step is cutting shapes and preparing to stitch...

Sew, I'm learning how...
Using youtube and some trial and error, I managed to wind my bobbins and thread the machine.
Here are two pieces of 2mm leather I joined together with a hidden stitch and one top stitch
Now I thought I'd tackle a practice piece that resembles my seat...a pillion pad for another bike.
Start with chalk markings on topsheet...something to follow and wipes off real easy

attach foam backing that's got one sticky side...
run stitching along my chalk lines and get that quilted effect...
all for now...next I will sew sides onto this and practice corners...maybe in a week or so I'll tackle the Shovel seat for real.

Your test pieces look just fine. That machine of yours handles that leather well.
I think you'll whip up a great lookin seat for the Econo when you're done practisin.

Yes I was, I voted in that election, I was 1...I didn't trust that hawknose prick even then...but we were farming folk and from the West, and even though I wanted everyone in Quebec to have more than we did, what else could I do!
here's how the practice piece turned out...
think I might try another to improve technique, but it's given me some ideas on application
Dogged

On to the real deal here...chalked out the seat panels on topsheet.
and then trace/cut out and pasted foam backing on reverse of top sheet, ready to carry on with stitching...wife said it reminded her of me...because I sometimes play music and sing

It's buried!
I managed to get the whole topsheet and backing quilted together...you may see me at a quilting bee in a town near you!
now comes the hard part...sewing the sides on this thing so I can attach it to the seat...wish me luck

Cut and fitted backing for bottom of seat, to fit once I've riveted cover on seat. A thin cotton textile stuff so seat don’t scratch fender...

Re: Well I'll fire another one up...no not a joint that shit make you lazy
Just practicing and reflecting on how to finish this thing without fucking it up lol! I've got quite a bit of time invested now...but I will say that for a $200 machine, this Omega is a great rig, makes the actual sewing very easy. It's the planning and cutting that takes the time
anyway, after sleeping on the plan for a bit, cut out the side panels for main seat...Bump the bug for scale
in order to make the curve work, I reworked my plan and folded the top edge/sewed it prior to attaching to the quilted top plate of the seat cover.
