My great grandad's blacksmith box
Was down visiting Dad in Alta this weekend, he gave me this ol box full of various and sundry stuff from early 1900's Onterrible. Alex Connell, my great grandfather, was a blacksmith, and the box had a bunch of stuff he used or made, and additional household/farm items...thought I'd share pics.
Here's the lot
And close ups...
Some timber stamps, tie cutting axe, see that stone in middle there...that's indian club made outta pumice or some other porous rock
Wood and steel pulleys, sickle, ladles, soldering irons various sizes, homemade nails

Garden implements?
Some handmade axes and branding irons, and a look at the packing crate lid
Couple irons and some logging hooks
Logging chain, think that long bracket on box edge is for lifting ice blocks for ice house, one old egg-bar horseshoe (grandpa did lotsa farrier work)

Those items are great possessions in their own right. To have your grandads tools and fabrications is a treasure.
I see lots of familiar old tools. Some will come in handy in your firewood gathering.
Great old broad axe and combo axe/timber stamps.
Nice selection of P-Vee ends.
Looks like he did a little metal melting as well as his own ironing.
I'd suggest one garden tool is a shake splitting froe,if they did that on the prairies.
The ice block lifter is a different tool to have.
That corrective or rough ground horse shoe is one that doesn't show up very often.

I believe you're correct about the shake splitter and the ladles Denn. They have some stamping on them that indicates they're for melting metal
