Was working up Morrisey and McEvoy Creeks today, near the Elk River. This area has a lot of coal history and there are ruins all over the place. The area was a Dominion Coal Block back many a moon ago, they actually used handbuilt coking ovens to coke the coal...I've never seen anything like this before, maybe some of you have.
There is a line of probably 12 to 15 of these old handbuilt stacks, all firebrick lined, right alongside the Morrisey road only about 2 clicks off Highway 3 between Elko and Fernie. Could literally ride there on the Shovels to look at it. Okay enough ranting, here they are:

And a look inside, probably 8 feet in height, 12 foot across the base (eerily like an Auschwitz site)

Yeah Koot, no provincial funding here, totally unrestored and undeveloped. There are more ruins further up the valley, mine entrances and looks like chutes of some kind. Real cool and real accessible.

There use to be coke ovens in Union Bay (just down the coast from Me0.Locals have raided them years ago and used the brick for features in their houses and yards i.e. chimneys, yard walls.
That location sounds like a shovel ride destination in the summer.Anyone got a metal detector?
