Tech Questions for Y'all 45 afficionados....

Post  sunnydog on Thu Feb 06, 2014 11:01 am

Hey you 45'ers, yeah ya know who ya are out there!! I'm trying to run my oil lines on this l'il rig and I need to confirm some tech facts about the oiling system.

Here's a pic of my upper oil pump, I think the oil line "from" the oil tank goes directly into this main fitting on top right?

Then the return line comes out of this lower pump and back to the oil tank?

Now is this the chain oiler or the crankcase breather or what? ....And where does this one connect to??

There is that little spigot sticking out of the primary side right behind the PTO, should it be plugged off?
Sorry don't have a photo of that one, but I do have one more photo

Couldn't resist, I know ya'll are just animal haters....typical of harley riders I've found

Hey Johnny B. , the upper pump is your supply ,it gets gravity feed from oil tank, the bottom pump is your return back to oil tank,
the fitting on crankcase behind the rear exhaust tappet is a crankcase vent line that goes to highest spot in oil tank.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Larry! One more question: External oil filter should be between return line and oil tank?

Yeah, You take a line directly from your scavenge,(bottom ) pump,& go to oil filter , then outlet line from oil filter goes back to oil tank. Sounds like you`re almost ready to flash it up.

That's absolutely right Larry....right on!

And Koot, I knew it wouldn't be long fore you shared some verse...not surprising how the Shovel crew is so much steeped in rhythm and sound...

Outside chance i may try to fire that 45" this weekend, just need to spend about 3-4 more hours on her, damn she's close.....and fuck-a-duck did spring ever sprung on us this year....I'll bet we'll get honed by another small cold snap yet, but if this bike runs I will be riding this weekend sunny

P.S. there is the small issue of timing this little honey that I'm gonna need some advice on.

Had a good chat with h.d. yesterday...was lookin at mounting my distributor stop tab under the valve spring block of my 45....after some discussion, Larry suggested I fab a top mount 'stop' to save me from havin to dismantle the cylinder head to get the stock one in there....so I did

My stock tab mount plate is pretty boinked from corrosion anyway, so I'll cut the horseshoe off it and weld it to my homemade mount plate

Looking at the picture, your timer is fully advanced, Normally you have the timer retarded all the way the other direction for starting , then full advance after it fires up. You will know what works best for ya after you run it a bit. My 45 seems to start good fully advanced or retarded.

Here's the inaugural vid of the little green flatty come to life....and yes she's already playing with the emotions of the crowd....got a shifter fork issue (?) in the tranny, she likes to jump into gear....anyway I'm gonna deal with this issue before doing any test runs, don't wanna blow up my tranny.  But she runs and she sounds good the little darlin'....gonna check for intake leaks and already fixed the brake(s) once.
Koot said we need to exercise some demons from her....I said shit I'm the one who needs exercise.  Suspect

By the way, this all went down at Hammers secret birthday party, he just turned 29.
