Concern over Crack Empty Concern over Crack

Post  sunnydog Sun May 05, 2013 2:33 pm

Helped young Lee the bike builder pull his top end yesterday, front cylinder appears to have starved for oil, piston scored up on back thrust face front cylinder, also roughed up the jug. Cylinder has a hairline crack at base running up about 3/4 of an inch from skirt up to casting....question: can this be welded?

Otherwise, rear cylinder okay, appears to be stock bore 80", 3.494 inches mic'd. This is an early 80's FLT motor in a chopper frame. I will try to get him to send pics.

Anything can be welded , but what caused the crack would be the issue

Think it started w the oiling issue leading to overheating and a piston slap issue.

Yes he would have to rebore. It's likely that you're right Wade, cheaper to replace, but he is one hell of a welder, does it for a livin.

Well it could be welded , but it is cast and cast has a strong tendancy to crack when welded Shocked

sooo , I dunno , great welder or not, is it worth the cost and risk Wink
