The Assless Horse project
Working on the Shovel this Friday nite...really enjoying doing this refit, just me and the ol bike, and a beer.
Took the back end all apart again, gotta re-do the tail light and signal wiring. Here's the "assless horse"
And a point-of-view shot, wheel and swingarm removed, cleaned up the grime and grit, wiped away the oil.
Then tore apart the old hinged fender wiring, working on refitting it the FX fender
more to come tomorrow...

Denn, yesterday I touched up the 'template' and gave it to the wonderkid...hopefully he can get somethin done on it this weekend. Stainless 1" x 1/4" stock. I'm pretty excited, he's a real good tig welder...will post pics the minute I got it in my hand for sure.
BTW, How's your top end work goin?

I'd like some pics if ya got time...Koots gonna help me pull the heads off mine to redo gaskets and check out tolerances in the next couple weeks. Hope I'm not opening Pandora's Box and letting out all the good ju-ju fumes....she's been a notoriously good runner.

Re: The Assless Horse project
Don't think any pics that I take w/ my camera will be of any good to you. Can't get good detail w/ it.You mentioned leaky rocker box gaskets.Check closely where they leak on the heads and boxes for irregularities and especially an overall flat mating surface. That's how I noticed the thin casting on the rear box not sealing on the James gasket bead.My surfaces are good-just not wide enough at that one spot.A little "Right Stuff" will fix that.

Re: The Assless Horse project
Denn,
Is machining the only way to 'regularize' those surfaces? If I'm going to the trouble of taking it apart I wonder if it's worth it to go the distance with resurfacing too.

Re: The Assless Horse project
I just use some wet/dry paper taped to a piece of plate glass for truing the boxes.I've never needed any aggressive grit paper to get a nice even contact area.Figure 8 motion on the paper. It's a little hard to do the heads with the rocker box studs in them.I've been dealing with new S&S heads for the last few years and they need no truing. If needed, the fact that they use bolts instead of studs would make it somewhat easier.Trying to pull those stock interference fit box studs can lead to alot of frustration. With stock parts I'd do the boxes as noted and use paper gaskets with a good sealant rather than deal with the studs.
One thing that I just thought of w/ older stock heads---look at the base of the studs where they come out of the heads.Notice any raised head material that has been pulled up by torqueing down the boxes? If this is too much of a hump, on the mating surface ,it can cause the box to not get a full pull down and leak.If you decide to do the full disassembly of heads and machine the surface,I have a few of the replacement rocker box studs if ya break some off.

Re: The Assless Horse project
Kinda pisses me off the shovel tech that i've forgotten over the years.I do remember some when it comes up but I find that I keep second guessing myself as to whether or not the tech is accurate.I've got notes in a book but I never can find what I'm looking for.

Re: The Assless Horse project
I don't have the best memory for stuff like that! I can remember dirty jokes from when I was 10 but can't remember what I did last week. Now I take lotsa pics and write stuff down for sure. The tech threads on ShovelheadUS are very valuable to me for this reason. I try to copy and save as much of that stuff as possible, even hard copies.
